Special Containment Procedures
SCP-457 is to be confined within a chamber measuring 5 meters by 5 meters, featuring comprehensive fireproofing on all surfaces with a cumulative thickness of no less than 22.9 centimeters (9 inches). Fireproofing materials such as asbestos cement and perlite boards should be utilized. Additionally, the chamber must include a blast-proof observation window with emergency blast shielding. The entry to the chamber should comprise at least two temperature-controlled and airtight chambers that can be sealed in case of emergencies. SCP-457's chamber should maintain a high humidity level and be equipped with a floor drainage system, a continuous misting sprinkler system, and emergency hoses capable of delivering water at a minimum pressure of 2.1 MPa (300 psi). A small structure may be provided on the chamber wall, kept free of water, to offer minimal protection and preserve SCP-457's form.
Personnel entering SCP-457's chamber must wear Class-A temperature-controlled, flame-retardant sealed suits and enter in groups of three. Two of these members should be equipped with high-grade blast shields and carry emergency fire extinguishers. Personnel are only allowed to enter SCP-457's chamber for the purpose of supplying SCP-457 with its daily fuel material allotment or to inspect and repair any damage to the chamber or sprinkler systems.
In the event SCP-457 displays hostile behavior towards personnel, it should be controlled using emergency extinguishers and hoses until it retreats to its secure chamber.
In case of a containment breach by SCP-457, emergency sprinkler systems will be activated, and personnel will be provided with extinguishers and blast shields.
Description
For all intents and purposes, SCP-457 manifests as a sentient entity composed of flames. The actual composition of SCP-457 remains undisclosed and has proven to be invisible and undetectable through conventional means. Its form is defined by the flames it generates, and when provided with sufficient fuel, it often takes on a human-like appearance. In its most rudimentary state, SCP-457 appears as a solitary flame, roughly the size of a matchstick. In this form, SCP-457 demonstrates only basic directives, exhibiting no extraordinary attributes compared to regular flames, apart from a tendency to spontaneously flicker to burn human hands and the capability to "jump" to more flammable materials or other flames, subsequently assimilating them into its collective form.
As SCP-457 increases in size, it can adopt more intricate shapes, with its intelligence commensurate with its dimensions and the availability of fuel sources. SCP-457's mechanism of intelligence remains enigmatic, but upon reaching approximately human proportions, it consistently assumes a human-like form composed of flames. SCP-457 has been observed to communicate by crafting letters from its own flames, scorching them onto surfaces, and more infrequently, through speech generated by high-pressure, superheated air, accompanied by the crackling and popping sounds of flames. Upon reaching an undisclosed size and fuel threshold, SCP-457 divides into two entities, and this process repeats iteratively. However, multiple instances of SCP-457 tend to exhibit aggressiveness towards each other, often attempting to consume or
extinguish their duplicates, especially in situations with limited available fuel.
SCP-457's behavior primarily centers around acquiring larger fuel sources and spreading. The danger associated with SCP-457 arises from its capacity to augment its intelligence with size and its apparent ability to learn and mimic behaviors. Consequently, it has been known to intentionally damage and sabotage sprinkler systems and, in rare cases, set relatively sophisticated traps.
SCP-457 has also made attempts to deceive or negotiate with personnel in order to secure its release or gain access to more fuel. Due to SCP-457's distinct composition, variable intelligence, and uncooperative nature, it defies straightforward psychological categorization within human terms.
SCP-457 was encountered in ██████, █████ during the summer of 2007, following its attribution to multiple wildfires. The initial origin and formation of SCP-457 remain unknown. Ongoing investigations are exploring the possibility of SCP-457's involvement in other significant fire-related incidents.
